John Evans

A Massachusetts painter with a national reputation and following, John Evans approaches his canvases with the same passion, discipline, and abundant gifts as he brings to his golf swing and his blues guitar.

In his landscapes – often grand, ambitious, and vast – one can observe a distinctly contemporary sensibility embracing a treatment of light and air that recalls the Luminists of the late 19th century. Evans’s boat paintings, a series he launched last spring at Alpers Fine Art, are disarming, intimate, and lyrical. They evoke and allude with the economical completeness and resonance of haiku. They’re boats rendered as you might glimpse them in moonlight, in enveloping fog, in addling, unmediated mid-day sun, in airy dreams of flight or flotation that subtly return all the next day.

John’s paintings hang in many of the country’s most prominent public, corporate, and private collections. He and his wife, the painter and sculptor Carolyn Evans, have two grown children and two well-fed cats.
