What Interests and Drives Me
Every hour of every day, our oceans lose eelgrass colonies the size of two football fields. The health of the oceans' diverse seagrass habitats directly affects the vitality and abundance of our oceans.
Because seagrass beds play such an essential role in oceanic ecosystems, habitat loss is a falling domino that initiates a cascade of ill effects: depleted oxygen for our atmosphere, reduced shoreline protection, ever-declining food sources for fish and marine mammals, less protein for humankind, and more free-ranging CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere, where it produces its own wide-ranging, climate-damaging effects.
As an artist and environmental activist, I seek to dramatize the interconnectedness of plant, animal, and human life; the complexity and fragility of marine habitats; their critical importance to the well-being of our planet and its miraculously diverse species; and our mandate to preserve their health for the benefit of future generations.
As an activist, instead of carrying a placard, I move paint, and I do so with the intention of moving others, first to awareness, then action on behalf of our beautiful, bountiful, and imperiled seagrass meadows.
